Angel Sponsored by Joan Presecan, Marilyn Dale, & Sandra Baldonado Born: November, 2001 Position: Main leader Experience: Angel is an experienced veteran and the strongest leader I've ever run. She leads every race for us, including Iditarod 2009 virtually start to finish. She has also run Iditarod with Ryan Redington and Diana Moroney. Plus, she is the mother to many of our best dogs. Personality: Very shy with strangers, but loves anyone who will run her. Completely dependable. A phenomenal leader with drive, intelligence, speed and stamina. Angel is one of the heartbeats of our team.
Scooby Sponsored by Missy & Danny Poore, DDS Born: March, 2002 Position: Main leader Experience: Scooby leads all our races for us. He led a good portion of Iditarod 2009 before being sent home as a precaution when the weather got cold (he is prone to frostbite). Personality: Enthusiastic, joyful, hardworking maniac. Very tough, very happy. Will knock himself out trying to do what is asked. We count on him to keep the team going, no matter what. He has become a bit spoiled, and now thinks he is supposed to get to ride in the cab of the truck, come inside to visit, and run around loose all the time.
(Power!)
Fly Sponsored by the Routh Family
Born: June, 2004 Position: Team (He can lead, but you might not want to go where he does) Experience: Fly has been the engine on every race I've run, including Iditarod 2009. He also ran Iditarod with Ryan Redington in 2008. Personality: Outgoing, obnoxious, hyper-active, always in to something, makes friends wherever he goes. Very lovable, very annoying! Fly is our most athletic and hard working dog. He never seems to get tired. Great feet, super attitude, and eats everything in sight. He seems to be convinced that everyone comes down to the dog lot just to visit him. If you aren't close enough for him to reach, he will clack his teeth together to get your attention.
Skeeter Sponsored by Chris Sagan
Born: June, 2004 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Skeeter is a major part of the team in every race, including Iditarod 2009. He also ran Iditarod with Ryan Redington in 2008. Personality: Sweet, calm, reliable, but has a goofy side. He loves to play with squeeky toys, and is very affectionate. A solid, dependable dog with a good work ethic, he is a good leader and has become one of our "go-to" guys. One of the most friendly dogs, he loves to greet visitors.
Alis Sponsored by Dan, Sara, Colin, & Heather Domonoske
Born: October, 2003 Position: Lead/Swing Experience: Alis is always a strong member of our race teams. In Iditarod 2009 she surprised us by leading some of the tougher sections of trail late in the race. Personality: Shy and serious, but can be silly with those she trusts. A bit 'invisible' as she quietly does her job with no fuss. She is really helpful in swing, helping to turn the team if the leaders 'forget' what gee and haw mean. A real workhorse.
Flip Sponsored by Bill & Beth Steele
Born: 2005 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Flip finished Iditarod 2009 and all our other races since we bought him. He is a strong, hardworking, reliable dog. Personality: Ryan loaned Flip to us for the Taiga 300 in 2008. He was such a great addition to the team that we talked Ryan into selling him to us. He is a tough, hard worker with a powerful, smooth trot. Easy going and friendly. He has had a hard time fitting in with the rest of our dogs, but he is very affectionate and silly with us.
Cerveza Sponsored by Doug & Sue Brandt, Diane & Rick Brandt, and Maryann Panarella
Born: May, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Cerveza has completed most of our mid-distance races, and ran 500 miles of Iditarod 2009 until a minor shoulder injury sent her home. She probably could have continued and finished the race with some massage and extra attention. Personality: Friendly and sweet with people, she demands attention. Can be 'bitchy' to other dogs. Runs her heart out. She shows real talent at leading, and is very driven.
Luna Sponsored by Gwen Rodman (Mom)
Born: May, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Luna was one of few yearlings to make the team for every race during her rooky year. As a two year old she ran in all our races, including Iditarod 2009. I sent her home early since she was in heat, but I have no doubt she would have finished otherwise. Personality: Sweet, loving, and affectionate. Easily spooked and prone to shrieking when startled, yet probably the toughest dog we have. As a yearling, she really impressed us, and even led a bit during races. She proved her toughness and drive during the Taiga, when she ran the entire race with sore wrists but never quit wanting to pull.
Deja Sponsored by Dennis & Joanne Keith Born: July, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Early season injury sidelined her as a yearling, but she ran in every race as a two year old, including Iditarod 2009. Personality: Smart, quick, and a bit of a brat. Hard worker, lots of talent. In harness, she puts her little head down and pulls like a demon - all you see is the power curve in her back. Her desire and talent make up for her lack of size.
Voodoo Sponsored by Auntie Carol
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team Experience: Injury kept him from racing as a yearling, but he came on strong the next year. He finished every race including Iditarod 2009 as a two year old. He is one of the hardest pullers and best eaters during races. Personality: Laid back, silly, likes to flop over for tummy rubs. Voodoo is a big guy and is a real powerhouse in the team. He eats everything in sight during races, and likes to discipline any dogs in front of him who try to stop or slow down.
Aberdeen Sponsored by Joyce Griffith
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team/lead Experience: As a yearling, Aberdeen was a stand out performer. As a two year old he continued to run in every race, and finished Iditarod 2009. Personality: Very shy with strangers, very affectionate with us. He has a smooth, fluid gait, and an absolutely horrendous shriek when he is demanding to go. He shows great talent in lead. Aberdeen has tremendous drive, toughness, and talent, but his future is uncertain. As a yearling he had a large lump on his back leg, which proved to be cancer. Although it was predicted that he would loose the use of his leg after removal of the tumor, so far he is doing great! Since that diagnosis his tumor has not reappeared, and he has continued to run, even finishing Iditarod in superb shape. As long as he is happy to run, he will stay on the team.
Chase Sponsored by Renee Van Huele
Born: July, 2006 Position: Main leader - starting as a yearling. Experience: One of few yearlings to make the team for every race in his rooky year, including leading most of the Taiga 300, an incredible feat for a youngster. As a two year old he helped lead part of every race, including the majority of Iditarod 2009. Personality: Intense, demands to run. Likes attention from friends, but not strangers. Never gets tired, and never quits shrieking to go. Chase was the best yearling I have ever seen, and continues to improve as a he gets older. We are very excited to have Chase in our team!
Shotgun Sponsored by Richard and Sandra Hendrickson
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Shotgun was one of few yearlings to make every race. As a two year old he ran in every race and completed Iditarod 2009. Personality: Affectionate to friends, but a bit aloof with others. Confident and fairly independent (this means he doesn't always listen). A steady, hard worker who is easy to handle. Shotgun is a beautiful chocolate brown dog with a long, rangy build. He has an effortless, smooth lope and handles long runs with ease. He is starting to develop as a good leader.
Trouble Sponsored by Ruth & George Parker
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team - so far Experience: Trouble showed lots of talent as a yearling, and finished every race as a two year old, including Iditarod 2009. Personality: Adventurous and outgoing, loves people, running, and food. He really loves to come inside the house to visit and cuddle. He's a very happy guy! He is a bit shy in lead so far, but does a great job when not intimidated by the dogs nearby.
Azure
Born: April, 2007 Position: Team, rookie leader Experience: Raced in the Knik 200 and Don Bowers 300 as a yearling. Personality: Happy and affectionate. Gets extremely excited during hook up. She is tiny but motivated, and already showing some signs of leading.
Sable Sponsored by Richard and Sandra Hendrickson
Born: April, 2007 Position: Team Experience: Raced in the Knik 200 and Don Bowers 300 as a yearling. Personality: Affectionate, a bit more serious than her sister Azure. Looks almost identical to her full sister Cerveza. She is a hard working power house, and very large for a female. She is so eager to go that she rears and lunges whenever the team is stopped.
Suzy
Age: 3? Position: Leader Personality: Happy, friendly, and a hard worker. She was loaned to us for the 2008-2009 season, and now we have purchased her. She is a smart leader and gets along great with everyone. We think she looks like Santa's Little Helper (Bart Simpson's dog).
Mercedes Sponsored by Bea Churchill and Judy Evans
Age: 3? Position: Team Experience: Mercedes finished every race with us during 2009, including Iditarod. Personality: Mercedes was loaned to us for the 2008-2009 season, and now we have purchased her. Very shy and uncomfortable at first, she is starting to relax and enjoy herself. She is invisible in harness, doing her job without fuss and working well with everyone.
WSU (Wazoo) Sponsored by Bryan Bearss
Age: 5 Position: Lead Experience: WSU has run Iditarod with several other mushers, and helped lead our team through some terrible wind storms during Iditarod 2009. Personality: An experienced Iditarod leader on loan from our friend Bryan Bearss for Iditarod 2009. He's agreed to let us borrow her again, so she is going to stay on our page! She is a sweet, friendly little pet, but also a tough, driven sled dog. She has about twice as much personality as you can imagine would fit in her little body.
Barley
Born: March, 2005?
Position: Puppy trainer Race Experience: None Personality: A strong, hard working dog, and our resident puppy-uncle. He may not be made to go distance, but he can sure power the sled on short runs. He is really our house pet, but he likes to pretend he is a sled dog.
Razor
Born: June, 2008 Position: Just a baby Personality: A big bruiser and goofy guy. NO clue in lead, but sure likes to pull in team. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Hatchet
Born: June, 2008 Position: Just a baby Personality: A smart pup, but still a bit silly. His narrow little face inspired the theme for the 'sharp' litter. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog). Already showing tons of talent as a leader.
Chisel
Born: June, 2008 Position: Just a baby Personality: A long, lanky, friendly pup. Serious digestive problems almost killed him when he was about 4 months old, but he has survived to become a big, solid dog. He is a bit calmer and more willing to listen than his littermates. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Cutter
Born: June, 2008 Position: Just a baby Personality: A crazy, active youngster. It is almost impossible to hang on to this wiggly guy! From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog). Led like a veteran his first time out, but still needs to learn how to play with others.
On to Other Adventures
Cricket
A sweet, happy dog. She couldn't quite keep up with our team, so she now lives with our friend Andy, and is a major part of his team.
Kroto A big tough boy, but just not able to keep up with our guys. He is also going to run with Andy's team.
Highway January 2009 - we lost our beautiful Highway this month. His desire to run led him to escape the yard, and he was killed by a train. We take comfort in the fact that it was a very fast end, and that he died while out on the trail, doing what he loved best - running down the trail.
Maggot A sweet, happy, tough little dog. She has had a hard time staying injury free, but she is such a good leader that she has gone to help another team who needs more 'front end' power. We will miss her, but we will visit often!
Gringo A cuddly, loving, but very tough boy. His yearling race year was incredible. An injury to his foot prevented him from being able to run with the team anymore. He is now a happy, spoiled pet in Eagle River.
