Angel Sponsored by Sandra Baldonado, Joan Presecan, & Marilyn Dale
Born: November, 2001 Position: Main leader Experience: Angel is an experienced veteran and the strongest leader I've ever run. She leads every race for us, including Iditarod 2009 virtually start to finish. She has also run Iditarod with Ryan Redington and Diana Moroney. Description: Very shy with strangers, but loves anyone who will run her. Completely dependable. A phenomenal leader with drive, intelligence, speed and stamina. Angel is one of the heartbeats of our team. Plus, she is the mother to many of our best dogs. She is getting a bit older, but still the leads the team with speed and wisdom. She may still be on the race team in years to come, or she may decide she prefers to contribute by making wonderful pups. Angel is due for another litter in May, 2010.
Scooby Born: March, 2002 Position: Main leader Experience: Scooby leads all our races for us. He led a good portion of Iditarod 2009 before being sent home as a precaution when the weather got cold (he is prone to frostbite). Description: Enthusiastic, joyful, hardworking maniac. Very tough, very happy. Will knock himself out trying to do what is asked. We count on him to keep the team going, no matter what. He has become a bit spoiled, and now thinks he is supposed to get to ride in the cab of the truck, come inside to visit, and run around loose all the time. Scooby is getting older, but we think he still wants to race a few more seasons.
(Power!)
Fly
Born: June, 2004 Position: Team (He can lead, but you might not want to go where he does) Experience: Fly has been the engine on every race, and has finished them all including Iditarod 2009. He also ran Iditarod with Ryan Redington in 2008. Description: Outgoing, obnoxious, hyper-active, always in to something, makes friends wherever he goes. Very lovable, very annoying! Fly is our most athletic and hard working dog. He never seems to get tired. Great feet, super attitude, and eats everything in sight. He seems to be convinced that everyone comes down to the dog lot just to visit him. If you aren't close enough for him to reach, he will clack his teeth together to get your attention. Father to many of our dogs, and will continue to be the foundation of our kennel.
Skeeter
Born: June, 2004 Position: Team Experience: Skeeter is a major part of the team in every race, including Iditarod 2009. He also ran Iditarod with Ryan Redington in 2008. Description: Sweet, calm, reliable, but has a goofy side. He loves to play with squeeky toys, and is very affectionate. A solid, dependable dog with a good work ethic. He used to do quite a bit of leading, but shows less interest in it now. No matter, he is a great team member, and one of our "go-to" guys. One of the most friendly dogs, he loves to greet visitors.
Alis
Born: October, 2003 Position: Lead/Swing Experience: Alis is always a strong member of our race teams. In Iditarod 2009 she surprised us by leading some of the tougher sections of trail late in the race. Description: Shy and serious, but can be silly with those she trusts. A bit 'invisible' as she quietly does her job with no fuss. She is really helpful in swing, helping to turn the team if the leaders 'forget' what gee and haw mean. A real workhorse.
Flip
Born: 2005 Position: Team Experience: Flip finished Iditarod 2009 and all our other races since we bought him. He is a strong, hardworking, reliable dog. Description: Ryan loaned Flip to us for the Taiga 300 in 2008. He was such a great addition to the team that we talked Ryan into selling him to us. He is a tough, hard worker with a powerful, smooth trot. A great eater and one of the hardest pulling dogs we have. Easy going and friendly. When we first got him, he was a 'robot' worker, but now he has become affectionate and silly. It is funny to see such a big serious dog wiggling and tap dancing for attention.
Cerveza
Born: May, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Cerveza has completed many mid-distance races, and ran 500 miles of Iditarod 2009 until a minor shoulder injury sent her home. Description: Friendly and sweet with people, she demands attention. Can be 'bitchy' to other dogs. Runs her heart out. She shows real talent at leading, and is very driven. Lean build and absolutely beautiful, smooth gaits.
Luna Sponsored by Mom (Gwen Rodman)
Born: May, 2006 Position: Lead Experience: Luna was one of few yearlings to make the team for every race during her rooky year. She has finished many mid-distance races since then. Description: Sweet, loving, and affectionate. Easily spooked and prone to shrieking when startled, yet probably the toughest dog we have. As a yearling, she really impressed us, and even led a bit during races. She proved her toughness and drive during the Taiga, when she ran the entire race with sore wrists but never quit wanting to pull. She has matured into a tough, hard working, reliable leader.
Deja Sponsored by Dennis & Joanne Keith
Born: July, 2006 Position: Lead Experience: Early season injury sidelined her as a yearling, but she ran in every race as a two year old, including Iditarod 2009, and has finished many mid-distance races. Description: Smart, quick, and a bit of a brat. Hard worker, lots of talent. In harness, she puts her little head down and pulls like a demon - all you see is the power curve in her back. Her desire and drive make up for her lack of size.
Voodoo
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team Experience: Injury kept him from racing as a yearling, but he came on strong the next year. He has finished many mid-distance races and Iditarod 2009 as a two year old. Description: Laid back, silly, likes to flop over for tummy rubs. Voodoo is a big guy and is a real powerhouse in the team. He is one of the hardest pullers and best eaters during races. He likes to discipline any dogs in front of him who try to stop or slow down.
Aberdeen
Born: July, 2006 Position: Main leader Experience: As a yearling, Aberdeen was a stand-out performer, and he has continued to be a part of our race team in many races. He finished Iditarod 2009 as a two year old. Description: Very shy with strangers, very affectionate with us. He has a smooth, fluid gait, and an absolutely horrendous shriek when he is demanding to go. He shows great talent in lead. Aberdeen has tremendous drive and toughness. As a three year old he developed into one of our best leaders. As a yearling he had a large lump on his back leg, which proved to be cancer. Although it was predicted that he would loose the use of his leg after removal of the tumor, so far he is doing great! Since that diagnosis his tumor has not reappeared, and he has continued to run, even finishing Iditarod in superb shape. We're hoping he completely beat the cancer and will remain happy and healthy for years to come!
Chase
Born: July, 2006 Position: Main leader Experience: One of few yearlings to make the team for every race in his rooky year. He lead most of the Taiga 300 as a yearling, an incredible feat for a youngster. He has led many mid-distance races, and led the majority of Iditarod 2009 as a two year old. Description: Intense, demands to run. Likes attention from friends, but not strangers. Never gets tired, and never quits shrieking to go. Chase was the best yearling I have ever seen, and continues to improve as a he gets older. We are very excited to have Chase in our team!
Shotgun Sponsored by Richard (Dad) & Sandra Hendrickson
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team/Lead Experience: Shotgun was one of few yearlings to make every race. Since then he has completed many mid-distance races and finished Iditarod 2009 as a two year old. Description: Affectionate to friends, but a bit aloof with others. Confident and fairly independent (this means he doesn't always listen). A steady, hard worker who is easy to handle. Shotgun is a beautiful chocolate brown dog with a long, rangy build. He has an effortless, smooth lope and handles long runs with ease. He is starting to develop as a good leader.
Trouble
Born: July, 2006 Position: Team Experience: Trouble showed lots of talent as a yearling, and finished every race as a two year old, including Iditarod 2009. He continues to be a main member in every race. Description: Adventurous and outgoing, loves people, running, and food. He really loves to come inside the house to visit and cuddle. He's a very happy guy! He is a bit shy in lead, but is a confident, strong team dog, and the loudest cheerleader we have. Whenever we stop for a break, Trouble shrieks and barks, getting the whole team riled up to keep running.
Azure
Born: April, 2007 Position: Main leader Experience: Azure has run and led most of our races since her yearling season. Description: Happy and affectionate. Gets extremely excited during hook up. She is a determined and tough leader with plenty of speed, very willing and responsive. She has a very bad habit of chewing through tug lines when excited, but only when she is not in lead. I think she is trying to tell us something!
Sable Sponsored by Richard (Dad) & Sandra Hendrickson
Born: April, 2007 Position: Team Experience: Has raced in all our mid-distance races since her yearling season. Description: Affectionate, a bit more serious than her sister Azure. Looks almost identical to her full sister Cerveza. She is a hard working power house, and very large for a female. She is so eager to go that she rears and lunges whenever the team is stopped. One of our strongest, hardest pulling dogs.
Suzy
Born: 2006? Position: Leader Experience: Injury has kept Suzy from racing since she came to us, but we know she is a tough, smart dog and we have high hopes for next year! Description: Happy, friendly, and a hard worker. She was loaned to us for the 2008-2009 season, and we liked her so much we bought her. She is a smart leader and gets along great with everyone. We think she looks like Santa's Little Helper (Bart Simpson's dog).
Mercedes
Born: 2006? Position: Lead Experience: Mercedes has finished every race with us since we got her in 2008. Description: Mercedes was loaned to us for the 2008-2009 season, and, like Suzy, we decided we had to keep her. Very shy and uncomfortable at first, she is starting to relax and enjoy herself. She is a sweet, very mild dog, and you'd never guess how incredibly tough and motivated she is. She is invisible in harness, doing her job without fuss and working well with everyone. In her first year with us she had no interest in leading. But in 09-10, she became one of our best and most reliable leaders.
Barley
Born: March, 2005?
Position: Puppy trainer Race Experience: None Description: A strong, hard working dog, and our resident puppy-uncle. He may not be made to go distance, but he can sure power the sled on short runs. He is really our house pet, but he likes to pretend he is a sled dog.
Razor
Born: June, 2008 Position: Team Race Experience: 2010 Knik 200 Description: A big bruiser and goofy guy. NO clue in lead, but sure likes to run along in team. If he doesn't decide to start pulling harder, he may become a pet dog. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Hatchet
Born: June, 2008 Position: Team/rookie leader Race Experience: Early season injury kept him from racing during his yearling season. Description: A smart, hard working dog. He is extremely high energy and very hard pulling. He shows exceptional drive to lead, and was very quick to learn commands. An early season injury kept him from full training as a yearling, so we are excited to discover if he will be as good as he seems to be based on shorter runs. As a pup, his narrow little face inspired the theme for the 'sharp' litter. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Chisel
Born: June, 2008 Position: Team Race Experience: 2010 Knik 200 Description: A long, lanky, friendly pup. Serious digestive problems almost killed him when he was about 4 months old, but he has survived to become a very big, solid dog. He has always been a calm, mellow guy, but is very strong and hard working. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Cutter Sponsored by Tom Derevjanik
Born: June, 2008 Position: Main leader (starting as a yearling) Race Experience: Finished every race as a yearling. Description: A crazy, active youngster with huge personality. Super friendly and happy. Led like a veteran his first time out, and ended his yearling season by leading a good part of the Taiga 300. His determination and skill out front are very impressive, and he promises to become one of the top leaders in the kennel. From Fly and Amelia (Ryan Redington dog).
Spartan
Born: March (?), 2008 Position: Team/rookie leader Race Experience: Ran most races as a yearling. Description: He is like a small draft horse, or maybe a baby orca. Ryan loaned him to us for 2010, and we really liked this guy. He is much too big and goofy to be a sled dog. But he pulls hard, never seems to tire, and has a great attitude. He also seems to really like to lead! When he isn't chasing his tail (and falling over or running into his house), he is leaping around chasing imaginary bugs. For some reason, we find his name very hard to remember or say, so it seems to change at random. He has been called Tartan, Titan, Spartacus, Spitwad, Sputnik, Sasquatch, Shoeshine, Slapstick, etc. He is happy to answer to them all. We considered changing his name to Ted, but have decided that might be confusing on several levels.
On to Other Adventures
Cricket
A sweet, happy dog. She couldn't quite keep up with our team, so she now lives with our friend Andy, and is a major part of his team.
Kroto A big tough boy, but just not able to keep up with our guys. He is also going to run with Andy's team.
Highway January 2009 - we lost our beautiful Highway this month. His desire to run led him to escape the yard, and he was killed by a train. We take comfort in the fact that it was a very fast end, and that he died while out on the trail, doing what he loved best - running down the trail.
Maggot A sweet, happy, tough little dog. She has had a hard time staying injury free, but she is such a good leader that she has gone to help another team who needs more 'front end' power. We will miss her, but we will visit often!
Gringo A cuddly, loving, but very tough boy. His yearling race year was incredible. An injury to his foot prevented him from being able to run with the team anymore. He is now a happy, spoiled pet in Eagle River.
WSU (Wazoo) An experienced Iditarod leader, loaned to us for two incredible seasons. She's back home now with Bryan, living it up as a house pet with a history.
